On the way to Franz Josef, Kiwi made us stop for an hour long walk along part of the shoreline. We were upset that we weren’t just going to our destination, but this stop actually turned out to be rather nice. The Cape Foulwind walk is famous for the Tauranga Bay seal colony, panoramic views of the ocean, and a lighthouse.

The Franz Josef Glacier is a 12 km long maritime glacier on the west coast of New Zealand. Three glaciers in the area descend from the Southern Alps and terminate before they reach the ocean. We stayed in the town of Franz Josef, located just a short distance from the park. The weather in this part of New Zealand is much cooler and wetter than in the other parts that we visited. We spent one day hiking through the park and up to the glacier.
